Ethio Agri - CEFT's Tea Farms Location

So far the largest commercial Tea Plantations in Ethiopia are those of Wush Wush and Gumaro located in South Western Ethiopia. These formerly state-owned Plantations together with the Tea Processing and Packing Factory in Addis Ababa were bought by Ethio Agri-CEFT in 2000.

Wush Wush Tea Plantations
Wush Wush Tea Plantation is endowed with ideal ecology for the production of good quality highland tea. Tea planting at Wush Wush Plantation started as a trial in 1973. Then tea development expansion continued by the government in 1981 till it reached its present size of 1249 hectares. In addition, 977 ha of eucalyptus trees were planted to serve as fuel for tea drying in the factories.

Gumaro Tea Plantation
Tea seeds were introduced to Gumaro in 1928 through Gore town, which is adjacent to the Tea Plantation. It is believed that The British Council General in Gore (operational during the time) obtained seeds from India and distributed them to local farmers. Then in 1957, a Lebanese expatriate living in Gumaro, in cooperation with a Belgian, expanded his tea estate to 25ha. In 1981 the Government started an expansion plan and developed it to its present size of 860 hectares. In addition, Gumaro has 761 hectares of eucalyptus trees were planted to serve as fuel for tea drying in the factories.

Processing Factory at Plantation Level
OUTGROWERS' SCHEME
The purpose of the outgrowers scheme is to attract and include the Plantations' neighboring small farmers in tea production. By so doing, not only will they earn additional cash but also gradually increase the country's tea production. The implementation of the scheme had started in 2004 by small group of farmers at both plantations, which are provided with tea seedlings and technical advice. When the tea plants get ready for plucking, both Wush Wush and Gumaro receive the green leaves from the farmers at agreed prices. Then the factories will process and market the tea.

Tea Processing and Packing Factory (TPPF)
The Tea Factory located in Addis Ababa is engaged in the final sorting, blending, grading, cup tasting and packing the tea. The cup tasting and blending ensures that each blend has good or enhanced flavour and body. To this end, the Cup Tasting Laboratory carries out several measurements and determination tests in line with ISO (International Organization for Standardization) parameters and decides on the best blending ratios. Blending is carried out in a blending machine. No artificial flavoring material is added to further enhance the flavour of tea. Once the processing and packaging is complete, the tea is ready for marketing including export.
Packaging and Market Brands
The three main brands of black tea (Gumaro, Wush Wush and Addis) are prepared in 100 and 50gm packs. Addis Tea is also available in immersible tea bags of 2 gm each and 25 bags in a sachet. Tea Processing and Packing Factory has also started to pack and market herbal teas like chamomile and hibiscus. To cater for all tastes, other tea brands blended with cinnamon, ginger, mint and thyme are produced and marketed.

Production
Currently the total annual production of the two plantations is about 5700 tons. But, through improved management and processing, both productivity and quality are increasing. As a result, the annual total production is expected to reach about 7000 tons in a few years time.
